Don’t Miss Out: I Should Have Listened to Rachel

About 18 years ago, I almost joined the Y.
I was a single mom, working hard, trying to keep my kids busy and happy outside of our little apartment. A friend—shout-out to Rachel—told me to fill out a scholarship form and come with her to the YMCA.

I didn’t do it.

Why? Because I assumed I wouldn’t qualify. I didn’t get free school lunches, so I figured that meant I made too much. I thought a Y membership had to be expensive. And honestly? I let that anxiety talk me out of even trying.

Rachel, you were right. I was wrong. I should have listened to you.

Now here I am, all these years later—overseeing programs at the Albert Lea Family YMCA—and wow, do I see things differently.

The truth is, the Y is for everyone. Yes, we’re here to support people in serious need. But we also understand that plenty of middle-class families are just one bill or one life shift away from needing a little help too. That’s what our scholarship program is for. And it’s way more flexible and welcoming than I ever imagined.

Even without a scholarship, the membership prices are shockingly affordable:

  • A single adult household (you + your kids) is just $57/month
  • A two-adult household (two adults and all the kids living at home) is $76/month

That includes access to the fitness areas, gym, pool, teen space, junior gym, and child watch, so you can get a workout in while the littles play. Honestly, it’s kind of a lifesaver.

More than anything, I’ve found community here—people who care, who show up, who support one another. The kind of space I really could have used back then, if I hadn’t let fear keep me out.

So, if you’re thinking, “This probably isn’t for me,” or “I probably won’t qualify”—please, learn from me.

Come talk to us. Let us help. Don’t miss out.
You never know where that one ‘yes’ might lead.
